What is a Comprehensive Eye Exam?
1. Vision Measurements & Refraction
Which is better: 1, or 2? This test involves a doctor of optometry generating a prescription so that your eyes are able to see clearly and comfortably. Whether you have astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, or aren't sure what's going on, our experienced doctors will use the latest tech to get you seeing your best!
2. Ocular Health Examination
This involves a doctor of optometry looking at your eyes with special high magnification equipment to ensure that your eyes, from cornea to retina, are healthy.
A comprehensive eye exam gives you peace of mind that eye diseases and disorders are caught early and treated promptly, to prevent sight loss!
3. OCT Imaging
This is an important tool used to non-invasively and painlessly scan the retina to ensure there are no signs of ocular disease (eg. glaucoma and macular degeneration). An optometrist is required to interpret these scans.
It is highly recommended for everyone to have an OCT performed regularly. It is especially important if there is active eye disease (e.g. glaucoma, macular degeneration etc.) or if there is a family history of eye diseases, diabetes, or cardiovascular problems.
Frequency of Eye Exams
It is a good idea for new parents to bring their infants in for an eye exam at around 6 months old to ensure normal eye development. You'd be surprised what an eye doctor can see at this age!
After that, eye exams are typically done at around age 3-4 to make sure your kids begin pre-school with optimal vision.
For kids, teens, and seniors (65+), yearly checkups are strongly recommended because eyes can change frequently in these age groups. Adults can come in every 2 years, unless there are any underlying conditions like diabetes or any known eye disease.
